Introduction to Backcountry Skiing for adults and teens aged 16 and up will be offered on December 21st in Ouray. This will be a one-day introduction to the fundamentals of backcountry skiing in the San Juan Mountains. It will include instruction by a San Juan Mountain Guides instructor and will cover ski equipment selection and usage, basic snow and avalanche recognition skills, avalanche transceiver use, ski technique for uphill and downhill travel, and tour selection and planning. This is an intensive intro session. The actual field session will occur on Red Mountain Pass. This intensive introductory workshop will run from 9 am - 3 pm. All ski and avalanche equipment is included in the course tuition; however, students should come with their own appropriate winter clothing, snacks, lunch and water. The cost for this workshop is $60 for Weehawken Members and $66 for non-members. This workshop will also be offered on January 21st, February 3rd, February 25th and March 17th.
