The History of KRYD-FM The RIDE |
|
KRYD FM is owned and operated by Rocky
III Investments and the Varecha family who are local Western
Colorado residents and broadcast pioneers that have owned and
operated 18 different radio and television stations. |
| |
KRYD-FM is
a maximum powered 100,000 watt ERP radio station licensed by
the FCC to Norwood, Colorado. KRYD-FM 104.9-FM
broadcasts Free Form Rock 24 hours a day from a 10,200’ tower
elevation on the Uncompahgre Plateau, west of Montrose. With
a signal radius of up to 100 miles KRYD-FM reaches
throughout Western Colorado and Eastern Utah. KRYD-FM 104.9
operates from a studio at 475 Water Street in Montrose, Colorado
with a second
FM-92.7 transmitter in Grand Junction. |
| |
| In 1991 KRYD-FM 104.9 was granted a new FCC construction permit.
When no tower site could be found in the tall majestic 14,000
feet surrounding mountains the un-built permit was sold to the
Varecha family in 1997. With only 3 month remaining on the FCC
permit and facing forfeiture if not constructed on time, a temporary
site was found on top of Telluride Ski Mountain. |
| |
| The station was originally built in 1997 and licensed to Telluride,
Colorado. Although a beautiful location, Telluride is in a narrow
valley at 9,500’ and surrounded by the taller 14,000’ San
Juan Mountains which stopped the signal from traveling beyond
the immediate area. In 2000 owner Bill Varecha applied to the
FCC to move the tower and station to Montrose. |
| |
In
May 2006 KRYD-FM was granted a license to broadcast from repeater
92.7 in Grand Junction.
|
